Compared with the people living in these houses which I photographed from the train to the Montenegrin mountains, Henry David Thoreau lived in the center of civilization.

That Walden Pond is now a popular hiking spot with a pretty crowded beach…
I would have thought so.
But even in the time of Thoreau, he was not totally secluded, it seems to me from reading “Walden”. After all, there were always people coming by. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had secretly gone into town a few times to eat at McDonalds.
