Lawyers as Peacemakers

Some might be surprised to hear this, but as a lawyer, my main goal is to bring peace into the world. This is how I do it:

– Client calls and wants to sue everyone preemptively and proactively, to litigate left right and center, and to file more motions than there are birds in the sky.

– I send her my fee agreement and ask for payment of retainer.

– The next morning, client calls: “You know, I have thought about it. I don’t think it’s really necessary to do anything right now.”

And there it is, another family feud avoided.

That’s very refreshing! Many lawyers seem to rather encourage that sort of behaviour.

    • I may have been one of those lawyers in my early years.
But you have to imagine: You are straight out of law school, have studied and learned so much, and you are most eager to put all this knowledge to practice. It’s understandable, in a way.

But now, I have become older and calmer. I have discovered that I often recommend clients to throw away all the paperwork and go for a long hike in the mountains of Transylvania instead.
Especially when they only got a few good years left. You really wouldn’t want to waste those in courtrooms.

And I rather save my energy for the few cases that are worth it.

People really are the worst. LOL>

  3. So, if you can’t impress them with your intellect, baffle them with … bureaucracy? ;) Seriously, glad to see you’re on the side of de-escalation. Then again, you’ll never get the US-based honour of being the subject of shrill ambulance-chasing TV commercials. Wow. What a bummer. :D

    • For that, there is “Better call Saul”.
(If any part of my practice is ever going to be anything like his, it’s probably the part about almost dying in the desert.)

    • Um … never having seen, I guess my reply would be “Always remember where the bodies are buried – and the desert’s a bad place for that. Now, rural Ohio, with lots of pig farms, is a GREAT place to dispose of troublesome clients …. and opponents …. and anybody you just plain don’t like”. :D (Remember, one of my college economics profs was a former accountant for the mob. True story – a college teacher with an accordingly lousy salary drove a couple-year old Mercedes S class and wore Italian designer suits. You can learn a lot in Chicago. Trust me. ;) )
